KUCHING: Sarawak is poised to begin large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen by 2027 towards promoting renewable energy and reducing the carbon footprint, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the state was working with Korea on the project, which was currently on track.

“The hydrogen will go to Korea and the state will earn revenue from it,” he said when opening a forest conservation conference here on Monday (June 12).

Abang Johari said Sarawak was also working closely with Japan to produce green hydrogen for domestic use as well as export to Japan and Singapore.

He said the state was planning to accelerate the use of greener hydrogen energy sources with the goal of becoming the first hydrogen-driven economy in South-East Asia.

“Transitioning to a hydrogen-driven economy will bring multiple benefits to our state, including reduced carbon emissions, enhanced energy security and opportunities for economic growth and job creation.

“It’s an ambitious goal, but with determination, proper planning and cooperation from the government, businesses and the public, Sarawak can pave the way for sustainable development in South-East Asia,” he said.

In addition, Abang Johari said the hydrogen-powered autonomous rapid transit (ART) system for Kuching was expected to start commercial operations by the end of 2025.

He said the ART system would consist of trackless trams with rubber tyres, which would run on tarmac instead of rails.

“This ART will help to address traffic congestion between Kuching and Kota Samarahan.

“It will also reduce carbon emissions and air pollution from road transportation,” he said.
