KUCHING (Dec 17): The Sarawak government is currently exploring new collaboration opportunities with renowned aviation company Boeing Japan, focusing on the aviation sector and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg

Abang Johari noted that the initiative also aligns with the state’s goal of establishing its own airline.

According to him, Sarawak is also actively focusing on SAF production as an alternative fuel for the aviation industry, through joint research with Chitose Group and collaboration with Eneos Corporation in hydrogen production.

“Earlier, we had a discussion with Boeing in Japan where they presented several proposals as they serve as a hub for monitoring the developments in aviation involving Boeing aircraft.

“They have collaboration with Boeing in Singapore, as well as the Boeing network in Southeast Asia. So today, we are merely exploring potential opportunities for collaboration between Boeing and Sarawak as we aim to establish our own airline,” he said when met by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) and TVS after holding a discussion with Boeing Japan president Eric G John at the company’s headquarters in Japan on Tuesday.

However, Abang Johari said the new collaboration network in development and related research is still in the early stages.

“We will explore what we can do together, especially in SAF and renewable energy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Boeing Japan welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with the Sarawak government, with John expressing his excitement in meeting Abang Johari and praising his clear vision for sustainable aviation and SAF development.

He reiterated Boeing’s commitment to supporting Sarawak’s vision for the future of the aviation sector.

“We are very excited to meet the Premier of Sarawak. His vision for sustainable aviation and sustainable fuel in Malaysia is impressive,” said John.

John also discussed potential opportunities for Boeing’s growth in Sarawak, exploring ways to contribute to the state’s goals.

He said that the collaboration marks a promising step for both parties in advancing sustainable aviation technologies.

The delegation accompanying the Premier included Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi and other key officials.
