KUCHING (Dec 19): The hydrogen industry is poised to play a transformative role in the global energy landscape and Sarawak is committed to being at the forefront of this evolution.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that collaboration with leading technology players like Mitsubishi Power, alongside vital research and development efforts, is key to optimising the full potential of hydrogen and driving sustainable growth for the region.

“Strategic discussions between Sarawak’s delegation and the leadership of Mitsubishi Power also focused on collaborative opportunities and initiatives to strengthen Sarawak’s hydrogen ecosystem,” he said according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.

The Premier and his delegation today conducted a work visit to the Takasago Hydrogen Park in Tokyo, Japan, which marked a significant step in aligning Sarawak’s hydrogen aspirations with the latest hydrogen technologies from Mitsubishi Power.

During the visit, the delegation explored the integrated hydrogen value chain at the facility, gaining insights into next-generation hydrogen production technologies and the validation process of hydrogen combustion in advanced gas turbines.

This historic visit reflects the shared commitment between Sarawak and Mitsubishi Power to collaborate in advancing the hydrogen ecosystem and building local capacity to support Sarawak’s energy aspirations.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI)’s GTCC Business Division senior general manager Takuya Murase said it was an honour to welcome the Premier to Takasago Hydrogen Park.

He added that Sarawak’s vision of advancing a hydrogen-based economy aligns with Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to providing technological expertise and support.

As part of its ongoing support for energy development in Sarawak, Mitsubishi Power recently supplied a 500MW hydrogen-ready gas turbine to Petroleum Sarawak Berhad’s (Petros) Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant.

This project commenced in October 2024, with the gas turbine designed to burn fuel containing up to 30 per cent hydrogen, making it the most advanced power generation facility in the state.

Developed in 2022, Takasago Hydrogen Park integrates the development, demonstration, and validation of hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation technologies at a single location.

Hydrogen combustion equipment testing is conducted at the T-Point 2 combined cycle power plant validation facility, designed to support long-term testing of new technologies.

Mitsubishi Power is an energy solutions brand under MHI.
