KUCHING, Feb 24: Sarawak remains a carbon-negative State in its efforts to achieve environmental sustainability and address climate change.

Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, highlighted the State’s crucial role in supporting Malaysia’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“Sarawak is still classified as carbon-negative. However, the more important goal is to reduce carbon emissions.

“This effort focuses on energy conservation so that we can achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he said at SHEDA: ENCORE 2025 event today, as reported by TVS.

He also emphasised the government’s dedication to advancing sustainable development and green energy initiatives, including the formulation of environmental strategies aligned with national policies.

Dr Hazland noted that Sarawak has already implemented key policies, such as the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023 and 5 per cent tax on carbon credit sales, to regulate carbon trading and emissions.

Additionally, the State is investing in emerging renewable energy technologies, including biomass, wave energy, and green mobility, as part of its long-term sustainability agenda. – DayakDaily
