Sarawak to lead green hydrogen revolution with Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference & Exhibition 2024

July 12, 2023

KUCHING, July 12: Sarawak is poised to showcase its potential as a world hub for green hydrogen production and development through the first-of-its-kind Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen (APGH) Conference and Exhibition 2024.

Scheduled to take place from June 11 to 13 next year at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in the capital city of Sarawak, this event is set to propel Sarawak to the forefront of the green hydrogen revolution.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised the need to ramp up development and construction of green hydrogen plants, considering the demand for green hydrogen in the Asia Pacific region is expected to grow by 50 per cent per year over the next decade.

“The production of green hydrogen and its economic off-shoots will create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. It is estimated that hydrogen will generate up to 30 million jobs by 2050, and a USD2.5 trillion annual revenue boost to economies worldwide.

“Over the last year, it was announced that production volumes for hydrogen have increased by more than 40 per cent to 38 million tonnes per annum of additional capacity, roughly half of what the world needs by 2030 to be on track to meet the net zero emissions commitment by 2050,” he said at the official launching of APGH Conference and Exhibition 2024 at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur
today.

His text-of-speech was read out by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

Abang Johari asserted the need to move projects from feasibility to front-end engineering design (FEED) stage, to construction phase and ultimately operations.

“I am happy to share that our hydrogen projects are currently in the FEED stage and the Final Investment Decision (FID) is planned for next
year.

“Through APGH 2024, we will bring together leading experts from around the world to discuss the latest developments in green hydrogen, especially in the technology, policy, regulation and infrastructure development space,” he added.

With APGH 2024 also aiming to provide a platform for businesses to network and explore opportunities for collaboration, Abang Johari expressed delight over the opportunity for youths to take advantage of this to discover their passion and opportunities in clean energy, the energy transition and green hydrogen.

“The Sarawak government truly believes that we are ever ready to become a leading destination for green hydrogen investment,” he said. During the launch event, OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad (OCBC Bank) solidified its unwavering commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation by becoming the exclusive financial institution Partner for APGH 2024.

Anticipated to attract 100 exhibitors, 500 conference delegates and 4,000 trade visitors, APGH 2024 is organised by Borneo Business Connect Sdn Bhd, a DSA company, and supported by the Ministry of Energy and Sustainability Sarawak and Business Events (BE) Sarawak.

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Husain, Borneo Business Connect chairman Tan Sri Ahmat Kamaluddin and its director Datuk Dr M Gandhi as well as BE Sarawak chief executive officer Amelia Roziman were among those present.
