Kuching to receive first two ART vehicles by year’s end

KUCHING: The first two autonomous rapid transit (ART) hydrogen vehicles for Kuching’s public transport system will arrive here from China by the end of the year.

One unit, dubbed the “golden train” thanks to a bold yellow stripe on its front and sides, was pre-commissioned at CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co Ltd’s manufacturing facility in Yibin, China on Monday (Sept 9).

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin launched the pre-commissioning ceremony and also took part in the inspection and test ride of the vehicle.

In a statement on Tuesday (Sept 10), he said 38 ART vehicles were set to arrive in Kuching in stages starting this year.

Five will be delivered fully assembled while the rest will arrive as semi-assembled units over the next few years.

Lee said he was pleased with the progress, adding that the ART project had attracted widespread interest.

Sarawak to launch annual sustainability reporting for green initiatives

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s state of Sarawak is set to launch its annual sustainability reporting mechanism next year to track public sector contributions to the state’s green initiatives, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In his keynote address at the APPEC 2024 conference, an influential forum for the global energy industry held in Singapore on Monday, Abang Johari said the initiative – in addition to the state’s anti-climate change law which came into force on March 1 – will help build trust with citizens and international partners.

“By integrating climate considerations into every decision, Sarawak leads by example with strict regulations and transparent reporting, reinforcing our commitment to a sustainable future.

“These initiatives demonstrate that while embracing sustainable development, we remain focused on setting ambitious emission targets and enforcing regulations to ensure a resilient future,” he said.

Japan remains committed to invest in Malaysia’s green energy, focus on hydrogen

LIMA (PERU): Japan continues to show deep interest in investing in Malaysia’s energy sector, especially in the green hydrogen sector, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said Japan has already invested in Sarawak in the same industry and that it would continue to support Malaysia in terms of investment.
In December last year, it was reported that Sarawak would be producing green hydrogen on a large scale mainly for the Japanese market under a tripartite agreement inked between the Sarawak Economic Development Corp (SEDC) and two Japanese firms. “They are asking for our support and cooperation for what they have to offer. We can’t give a final decision (at this meeting). I have to bring it back to get a decision at the government level,” he said.

Energy: Can Malaysia be a hydrogen hub?

Green hydrogen was previously sidelined as a source of renewable energy compared with solar and wind due to its high production cost. However, as the decarbonisation journey progresses, more alternatives are necessary, especially to tackle emissions from hard-to-abate sectors.

This is also recognised in Malaysia as seen with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) launched by the Ministry of Economy in July 2023 and the Hydrogen Economy Technology Roadmap (HETR) in October 2023.
