Dr Hazland: S’wak boosting green hydrogen initiatives to become significant player in global market

KUCHING (Aug 14): Sarawak is advancing its green hydrogen initiatives with the aim of becoming a significant player in the global hydrogen market by 2030, said Datuk Dr Hazland Hipni.

To meet this aim, the Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister said the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub in Bintulu will produce approximately 250,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with 90 per cent for re-export and 10 per cent designated for local use.

“Key projects include H2ornbill, in partnership with Japanese firms Sumitomo and Eneos, as well as with South Korean companies Samsung and Lotte Chemicals.

Kuching to receive first two ART vehicles by year’s end

KUCHING: The first two autonomous rapid transit (ART) hydrogen vehicles for Kuching’s public transport system will arrive here from China by the end of the year.

One unit, dubbed the “golden train” thanks to a bold yellow stripe on its front and sides, was pre-commissioned at CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co Ltd’s manufacturing facility in Yibin, China on Monday (Sept 9).

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin launched the pre-commissioning ceremony and also took part in the inspection and test ride of the vehicle.

In a statement on Tuesday (Sept 10), he said 38 ART vehicles were set to arrive in Kuching in stages starting this year.

Five will be delivered fully assembled while the rest will arrive as semi-assembled units over the next few years.

Lee said he was pleased with the progress, adding that the ART project had attracted widespread interest.

Sarawak to launch annual sustainability reporting for green initiatives

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s state of Sarawak is set to launch its annual sustainability reporting mechanism next year to track public sector contributions to the state’s green initiatives, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In his keynote address at the APPEC 2024 conference, an influential forum for the global energy industry held in Singapore on Monday, Abang Johari said the initiative – in addition to the state’s anti-climate change law which came into force on March 1 – will help build trust with citizens and international partners.

“By integrating climate considerations into every decision, Sarawak leads by example with strict regulations and transparent reporting, reinforcing our commitment to a sustainable future.

“These initiatives demonstrate that while embracing sustainable development, we remain focused on setting ambitious emission targets and enforcing regulations to ensure a resilient future,” he said.

Premier: Ongoing research to ensure drop in hydrogen production costs, viable energy source soon

KUCHING (Aug 26): Ongoing research will further reduce the cost of hydrogen production, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He expressed confidence that this will enable hydrogen to become a viable energy source in the near future.
